Designing the Hunter Ranger – Dev Blog by Kevin Stocker, Lead Combat Designer
When we first decided to do the Hunter Ranger I was very excited! Being able to build an archer class inNeverwinter’s combat style would prove to have its challenges, but ended up being a pretty fun experience. In the end, I think we’ve created a class that is fun to play and adds a new dynamic toNeverwinter.
When we first set out to make a class, a lot of my early work is just spent playing through the content. I’ll make a few base powers, run through existing zones and build mechanics as I play. I think it’s a lot more effective to design gameplay as you play, because it gives you pretty immediate feedback as to whether or not something is fun. It’s always easier to have an idea, quickly implement a prototype and then decide whether to expand upon it or throw it away. I think it also helps keep me unattached to my ideas, which can be important for a designer. CONT Here!
Artifacts – Dev Blog by Chris Matz, Lead Systems Designer
With the upcoming release of Module 2: Shadowmantle, we’ll be adding a major new item type to the game – Artifacts. With these items, we wanted to create a feeling of advancement and attachment to an item; something most items don’t get to have. These items will become permanent fixtures for your character, and will be able to level up and get more powerful as you advance. We tried multiple iterations of different ideas for Artifacts, and we’re really happy with the system that we’ve ended up with.
Around level 20, your character will get a new quest, which will send him/her on a hunt for a lost item of power. After recovering that item, you’ll be given a choice of three Artifacts to start with – Lantern of Revelation, Waters of Elah’zad, or Aurora’s Whole Realms Catalogue. Each of these items will provide you with a small stat bonus, and when slotted into your Primary Artifact Slot, a new power! CONT here!
